This paper summarizes current information about the effects of alcohols on hematopoiesis as it pertains to the immune system, liver disease, and cancer.

1. Introduction

Alcohols are a class of naturally occurring molecules that can be readily synthesized from atmospheric carbon dioxide and water. These compounds are considered organic molecules, since they contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Alcohols can be classified according to the position of the hydroxyl groups they contain. The most common alcohols contain only one hydroxyl group, which is referred to as the primary alcohol.
